Description: Description: In the early and mid-20th century, the Wedgwood pottery of England produced plates for a large numbers of colleges and universities, likely as fund-raisers. They ranged from single plates up to entire dinner services. For the University of Pennsylvania, the company produced two strikingly different sets of twelve plates each, one in traditional blue transferware in 1929 and a second transfer-printed in red on custom blanks for the bicentennial of the school in 1940. This plate is from the 1940 series, with the custom blank with laurel leaves, school seal and profile of Benjamin Franklin. The twelve different images are all of buildings, all executed by Penn graduates, mostly focused on entrances, rather than entire buildings. This is the "The Engineering Steps" by J Roy Carroll, Jr. (1926). Size: 10.375" in diameter Mark: Impressed and printed Wedgwood marks on reverse, with a caption of the image on the front. Condition: Overall crazing, stain to rim at about 10 o'clock, some light utensil marks to center, which can only be seen under close examination. Shipping weight is 2.0 lbs.
