Description: USS STEELHEAD SS-280 1942 LAUNCH RIBBON, WWII This original colorful launch ribbon was sold during WWII by the Navy League to commemorate submarines manufactured at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yards and to raise finds to assist U. S. Navy sailor with financial needs during WWII. They were only issued for launches of Portstmouth Naval Shipyard submarines from either Portsmouth, NH or Kittery, Maine. THE LAUNCH RIBBON MEASURES 2 1/4" X 5 1/4". IT MADE OF A SILKY CLOTH MATERIAL It is in very good condition, with a crease across the middle. (please see photos of both sides of ribbon). Gato Class Submarine: Laid down, 1 June 1942, at Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, ME.; Launched, 11 September 1942; Commissioned USS Steelhead (SS-280), 7 December 1942; Decommissioned, 29 June 1946, at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA.; Laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Mare Island Group; Placed in service as a Naval Reserve Training Vessel on 12 November 1947 at San Diego, CA; Placed out of service and struck from the Naval Register, 1 April 1960; Final Disposition, sold for scrap 21 December 1960.
