Description: BOXED SET OF STERLING SILVERTEASPOONS1946 Elegant boxed set of six sterling silver teaspoons Fully hallmarked for Sheffield 1946Makers marks for Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd.'Cooper Brothers & Sons, The firm was founded in 1866 in Sheffield as Cooper Bros.In a directory of 1871 their address is given as 14½ High Streetand they are described as manufacturers of electro-platedand nickel silver spoons and forks.By 1876 the firm was in Bridge Street and in 1885 theypurchased the Arundel Street works where they remained until 1983.In 1895 the business became a limited liability company under the name ofCooper Brothers & Sons Ltd. In 1983 the business was acquiredby Frank Cobb & Co. Ltd' They were retailed by J Baker Ltd Hunter Street, Sydneyaccording to the sticker on the inside of box. I am calling them teaspoons because they have lovely deep wide bowls like a teaspoon but are a bit shorterthan normal. They are really a cross between a shortish teaspoonand a large deep bowled demitasse or coffee spoon. Makes them more versatile than oneor the other and perhaps this is the point. They were made the year following the endof WWII so maybe this was a sort of an 'economy' -only having to buy one set of silver spoonsto do two jobs. CONDITIONIn good vintage condition showing only a few signs of age and use. The odd tiny nick out of an edge here and there but nothing you wouldn't expect from a set of this era that has been used but treasured. They could do with a light polish.Box is quite good considering it is basically cardboard and the interiorwhite lining has some rust markbut not too bad overall. DIMENSIONS They measures approx. 10.2 cm long (4") and the bowls are 2.2 cm wide (2 7/8") Box measures 14.6 x 12.7 x 2 cm approx.
