A new one-cell plastic balloon capable of carrying 70 pounds of research equipment 20 miles above the earth is shown at the beginning of a six-hour test flight in this photo just released by the navy, which has accepted the "skyhook," as it is called, for upper atmosphere research. The balloon, which is about 70 feet in diameter and 100 feet long when inflated is carrying instruments for recording temperatures, pressures, cosmic ray intensities, solar radiation and other data, and also a parachute which floats the equipment to the ground when after six hours the balloon is punctured by an automatic device.Photo measures 6.75 x 10.75inches.
