Description: STRONG black / possibly South Pacific heritage burlesque dancer single pose elegantly holding a flashlight as a make do spotlight over a stunning fishnet & sequin ensemble. Possibly a very young Juanita Hall, a trained Juilliard vocalist and dancer, who became the first African American woman to win a Tony for her supporting role in South Pacific one year after this title. Reference images for comparison are not available. Even press stills like this one are rare, few show in archive and this dancer is not recorded. Movie posters in archives advertise the show as “Hot Rhythm, Torrid & Terrific” in the style of smut theaters. Indicative of the African American popular black culture / crossover into white musical audiences and beyond surging post WWII. Condition issues only affect margins (pinholes at corners & emulsion flakes from staple pulls). 8 x 10” w/ vertical crease at left that does not affect subject.
