Formed in 1926 when several smaller airlines were consolidated, it grew to be a dominant carrier, especially on the Eastern Coast. Subsequent expansion saw Eastern grow to serve the US West Coast, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and Europe. At its peak Eastern flew over 300 planes to over 100 destinations. Eastern at one time was headed by World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker and later astronaut Frank Borman. The company had many issues, to include severe completion from other airlines and internal labor problems. Many of Eastern's flights were short-haul, and the company did not benefit from the economies of longer runs. It also had several strikes which aggravated its finances. Eastern also competed head-to-head with non-union Delta Air Lines in its Atlanta hub. After a bankrupt filing, Eastern attempted to return to service, but it was not accepted well in the market.
