1950's NBA Cinci Royals Bucks OSCAR ROBERTSON High School Yearbook ~ Sr Signed

Description: 1950's high school annual with great photographs and text showing the students and faculty, activities and sports, graphics, pictures of school and surrounding, and local advertisement, and including then graduating senior star athlete and future College and NBA superstar guard Oscar Robertson who appears in basketball and track and class photos, signing his individual basketball picture. Great pictures and period design, from a small working class Afro-American school. Oscar Robertson is regarded one of the greatest players in NBA history, a triple threat who could score inside, outside, and was a stellar playmaker. As a rookie he scored 30.5 ppg, and he averaged more than 30 points per game in six of his first seven seasons. Only two other players have had more 30 point seasons. He was the first player to average more than 10 assists per game and the only guard to average more than 10 rebounds per game, doing so three times. He ended his career with 26,710 points (25.7 ppg), 9,887 assists (9.5 per game), and 7,804 rebounds (7.5 rpg). He led the league in assists six times and at the time of retirement he was the all-time leader in career assists and free throws made, and was second all-time leading scorer behind Wilt Chamberlain. Stringing his first five NBA seasons together, Robertson averaged a triple double, averaging 30.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 10.6 assists. His 181 triple-doubles is record probably never to be approached, and there was no 3-point shot in those days. He is credited as having invented the head fake and the fade-away jump shot, is a Hall of Famer, a Naismith "Player of the Century," and was ranked in Slam Magazine's 3rd greatest player of all time. In 1998 the NBA Player of the Year Award was renamed the Oscar Robertson Trophy. In college, his great play led the Cincinnati Bearcats to a 79-9 overall record during his three varsity seasons, including two Final Four appearances, leaving school as the all-time NCAA leading scorer. And he co-captained the 1960 gold medal winning USA Olympic Team. This year Robertson led his high school team to an undefeated State Championship, leading the team in all categories and in one game scoring 62 points. High School: Oscar Robertson went to an all-black high school and was coached by Ray Crowe who had a big effect on Robertson's style of play. As a sophomore in 1954, he starred on a team that lost in the semi-state finals (state quarterfinals) to eventual state champions Milan, whose story would later be the basis of the classic 1986 movie Hoosiers. When Robertson was a junior, his team dominated its opposition, going 31–1 and winning the 1955 state championship, the first for any all-black school in the nation. The following year, the team finished with a perfect 31–0 record and won a second straight State title. After their championship game wins, the team was paraded through town in a regular tradition, but they were then taken to a park outside downtown to continue their celebration, unlike other teams. Robertson stated, "Officials] thought the blacks were going to tear the town up, and they thought the whites wouldn't like it." Robertson scored 24.0 points per game in his senior season and was named Indiana "Mr. Basketball" in 1956.
