From its founding in 1865, the SP provided freight and passenger service for over a century to some 15 states (Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Utah). Like all larger railroads, the system resulted from numerous purchases and mergers, to include such fabled lines as the Central Pacific, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana and Texas, and St. Louis-Southwestern (Cotton Belt) railroads. The SP system spanned from Chicago to Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1988, the SP was acquired by the Rio Grande Railroad, but the new company kept the name of SP. The SP was later acquired by the Union Pacific (UP), and most surviving SP lines are now part of the UP system.   For decades the SP published a monthly company magazine, the "Southern Pacific Bulletin"; for auction is a copy of the October, 1952 issue. The front cover photo shows an SP employee retrieving an office supply in a campaign to reduce the costs of office supplies.   Feature stories include (a) the small items used in operating the railroad and the cost of such products, urging employees to be frugal; (b) the Boston (MA) sales office; (c) a woman SP telegraph operator who is the mother of 12 children; (d) a caboose decorated with a safety message; (e) safety classes; (f) radio communications used in moving SP campaign specials; (g) the annual Western Division picnic at Crow Canyon Park (CA); (h) reports from Division offices; (i) promotions, retirements, deaths, marriages and new-borns; more. This magazine measures appx 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches closed and contains 48 pages. There are over 50 photos. It is printed on a a medium-weight quality paperstock. The magazine is in very good condition, even though it is over 60 years old. There is no writing, markings, rips or tears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.  This item will have hours of reading enjoyment for the SP railfan or nostalgist.  Pictures sell!
