Although everything except the field meetand the actual races centered around the Daytona NationalGuard Armory, official headquarters of the motorcycle crowd,,Main Street still was an attraction. Don’t know exactly why,but when the visiting riders weren’t at the cycle show or onthe beach, you could find them scattered up and down the maindrag, sitting on parked machines bench racing with other riders.The accompanying photos are typical of the scenes on MainStreet between Atlantic Avenue and the Boardwalk on Friday,Saturday and Sunday. And every rider had a story to tell; howand why he was there; about the trip down to the sunny penin-sula and some of the old timers punctuated their tales with theremark, "Never missed a Daytona race”.They began to arrive as early as a week before the racesand by Friday evening nearly all of die hundreds of Motelsdisplay the "No Vacancy” sign. Then, on Monday, the citywas again empty of cyclists. Some traveled farther south toMiami and the Keys to make a more complete vacation of theirtrip and still others hurried home to their jobs anticipatingmore long week ends throughout the summer at similar events.That's another advantage to the sport of motorcycling. Ifyou can spare three or four long week ends a year, you don’tneed a vacation, just take in a program like Daytona.
