Cramp with his invention to clean the air - afa34715 This is an original press photo. Makes smog pay. communities can make money out of the products with which they presently contribute to the area's smog, according to George B. Cramp, mechanical design engineer of Pasadena, California. Distillation instead of incineration of rubbish is the answer, he says, and to carry out his idea designed and constructed this experimental still with which he's shown in his own backyard. It's an air cooled condenser attached to the standard backyard incinerator. From this apparatus Cramp recovered two gallons of liquid containing acetic and formic acid and two ounces of charcoal-like ash from 31 pounds of wood waste burned in his incinerator. The gasses from burning rubbish enter into the narrow duct condensers where the vapors are condensed into liquid form and drained off. Photo is dated 09/28/1954. Photo measures 9 x 7.25 inches.
