United States Air Force Balloons: A launching crew early today prepares to free this big plastic balloon for a trip many miles into the upper atmosphere. The big bag, made by General Mills, Incorporated, carries secret scientific instruments for the Office of Naval Research. The "bubble" shown in the picture is only the top section of the balloon; the rest of it is visible along the ground to the right. While the balloon was inflated with helium through plastic tube, shown handing from the right side of the "bubble," the balloon was anchored to the heavy wheeled device at left. Details concerning size and purpose of the balloon were not immediately disclosed. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-18-1954.
