Description: 1956 Original Matisse Mini Poster, Exposition Rétrospective Bas du formulaire Date: 1956 Size: 8 x 10.5 inches Artist: Matisse, Henri This Mini-poster is linen-backed and in excellent condition. This is an exceptional lithograph mini-poster in excellent condition from one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, designed specifically for the cover catalogue of a retrospective held in 1956, two years after his death. It features his cut-outs, a technique he called "painting with scissors". These were done in the last stages of his artistic career because of his deteriorating health, which failed to dampen his desire to play with colour. About the Artist: Henri Matisse (31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.
