The first successfully launched operational prototype of the United States Air Force's Titan ICBM blasts skyward in a test that will eventually lead to the missile's operational basis. When ready, the Titan will be launched from underground shelters that are designed to protect the weapon so it could strike a retaliatory blow if a nation sprang a surprise attack on the United States.
