Description: Marwal Chalkware Bust Head Woman Wearing Scarf For consideration is this vintage head or bust of a woman wearing an off-white scarf/hijab covering made by Marwal in the late 1950s to the early 1960s. She has a beautiful skin tone, mesmerizing amber brown eyes and just a hint of coral on her luscious lips. The hand painted colors are vibrant and she measures 10¼ inches tall, 6 inches wide and 6½ inches deep. The base is felt covered and marked in the back at the base. There are a few imperfections; some crazing and a couple of paint chips (see photos). She is in lovely vintage condition. Thank you for looking! NOTE: Chalkware is an American term for popular figurines either made of molded plaster of Paris or sculpted gypsum, and painted, typically with oils or watercolors. Early chalkware was often hollow and is difficult to find unblemished. Marwal offered a wide variety of plaster of Paris statuary, among which were several variations of head and shoulder busts of Polynesian/Hawaiian woman/girls and men/boys. Spanish themes and reproductions of famous sculptures featured Michelangelo’s Moses and Pieta and Michel Lucchesi’s The Ascent of Man. Marwal was in business during the early 1940s and ceased chalkware production around 1962 when the company incorporated.
