The Whiffenpoofs were founded in1909, when a group of five Yale undergraduates decided to continue on a more formal basis their Mondayevening harmonizing and fellowship at Mory's Temple Bar on the Yale campus. Drawing inspiration froma Kipling poem and a current musical show, the group composed the “Whiffenpoof Song," their own“anthem" which has since gained world-wide popularity.Fifty-six years have wrought extensive changes in the Whiffenpoofs. Membership has been expanded tothirteen or fourteen seniors who are chosen in the spring of their junior year by the retiring group. Therepertoire has likewise been expanded to include not only the treasured “old songs" contained in theWhiff Blue Book, but also sophisticated arrangements by present and past Whiffs of show tunes, ballads, lively jazz numbers, and barbershop favorites. The wide variety and uniform excellence of the Whiffenpoofrepertoire make the Whiffs equally at home singing in shorts before Bermuda’s rambunctious college crowd,or in white tie and tails before a sedate Carnegie Hall audience.During more than half a century since their inception, the Whiffenpoofs have performed throughoutvirtually all of the United States, as well as a large portion of Europe and South America. Every yearthe schedule includes such traditional engagements as the Bankers Trust Banquet in New York, a weekendof skiing and singing at Mt. Tremblant in Canada, a two-week stay at the Castle Harbour Hotel and Clubin Bermuda, every performance of the Yale Glee Club, and countless appearances at Yale and othereastern colleges. In addition, this year has brought several exotic concerts, such as serenading aboard anobservation boat at the America's Cup Races. Finally, faithful always to tradition, the Whiffenpoofs gathereach Monday night at Mory’s to sing and toast each other in a spirit of congeniality and fellowship thatis an integral part of the “Whiffenpoof Experience."But there is no finer way of appreciating what the Whiffenpoofs are than by listening as “the magic oftheir singing casts its spell." Here then are the Whiffenpoofs of 1965, called by devoted “connoisseurs” anexceptionally fine Vintage year.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSCover Painting — Peter F. ZollingerCopy by Robert S.
