Description: First edition of this large-format children’s classic. The author, Dare Wright (1914-2001), was an actor, photographer and model. Born in Canada, Wright grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Wikipedia states: “In 1957, she photographed her childhood Lenci doll, Edith, along with two teddy bears bought at FAO Schwarz, for her first children's book, titled ‘The Lonely Doll.’ The book made The New York Times Best Seller list for children's books.” This 1966 addition to the Lonely Doll series tells the story of a Christmas trip to the country and a hand-knit gift. The charming tale is presented with simple sentences illustrated by large black-and-white staged photographs. Hardcover, in fair to good condition. The gentle love of nearly six decades of readers has cracked and weakened the binding but all interior pages are present. Spine is missing sections (see photos). Front and back boards show edgewear and rubbed corners. The boards have a red-and-white checked pattern, with the cover showing a border around a black-and-white photograph. Some foxing. A pencil note on frontspiece reads “first edition.” No other writing, and other than a quarter-size stain opposite the title page, no stains, tears or underlining.
