Description: 1968 Press Photo Dr. Wayne Westfall at Rice-Pasture Research Extension Center This is an original press photo. Rice - Pasture Research Extension Center - Beaumont, Texas - Researchers at the Rice-Pasture Research Extension Center near Beaumont tried out three sources of nitrogen in test plots on Gulf rye grass. They found out that ureau, ammonium sulfate and sodium nitrate all produced higher yields. Rates from no nitrogen to 300 pounds per acre were used. Results indicate only the harvest after the first application, which was repeated after the second harvest. When no nitrogen was used, the harvest of dry matter per acre was 58 pounds. As nitrogen was applied the rate of harvest increased with the greatest increase shown when the highest amount of fertilizer was used. Yields from grass fertilized with ammonium sulfate and urea were the same. This despite the fact that urea is a 45 per cent nitrogen material and sulfate is a 21 pere cent material. Sodium nitrate is 16 per cent. Dr. Wayne Westfall, soil chemist at the ecenter, shown in this pasture, is standing in grass which was harvested on February 15. Just in front of him is the area which received no nitrogen. The difference in growth can easily be seen. Sodium nitrate produced less at higher rate and the research men believe that this is due to the pudding effect of sodium on the soil. Dr. Westfall says he wants to at least three years of work on this project before he can make a definite recommendation. However, he says, farmers are already looking at the plots and drawing their own conclusions.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 03-17-1968.
