Description: CHINESE MONAL About this bird: "This is the largest of the Monals and it is restricted to the mountains of southeast Kokonor and western Szechuan. The cocks plumage has an extremely brilliant metallic sheen, the legs are short and sturdy with a powerful spur and the bill is long. The tail is flat and broad with eighteen feathers. Full plumage is not developed until the second year. The birds walk with characteristic short, jerky steps." About the original illustrator John Gould: "was one of the most influential British ornithologists of the period. A noted collector, and the author of many books and nearly 300 articles for scientific journals, he also illustrated no fewer than 41 folio volumes. His wife, until her death in 1841, was responsible for the technical side of the lithographic process (for they published many of the works themselves), and a handful of plates were done by other artists, including Edward Lear and Joseph Wolf." This print was taken from a book dated 1969. The page itself measures 9 1/2" x 7". Print on page is smaller. Bird print on opposite side of the page (sclater's monal).
