Description: A Finnish-American who lived and died in Japan, Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) devoted himself to the art of woodblock printmaking and is today considered one of the foremost masters of the medium. He resided in Japan for over 50 years and drew inspiration from the vibrant streets of various prefectures, active ports along the coasts, and scenes of nature as they progressed through the seasons. You will see these elements often in his work.This woodblock is a rarity among Karhu's work. Being of a scale much larger than he usually worked. Including the frame, the woodblock measures 32 7/8” long x 23 3/4” tall x 7/8” thick. The matte window measures 24 1/2” long x 15 3/4” tall.The artwork depicts sinuous trees before a colorful building facade. It is titled "Karasuma Street - Kyoto," dated 1971, and is edition number 37 out of a limited run 50. It is signed in pencil by the late artist and expertly preserved in a black frame. No damage or wear to the print.
