About the Book:In "Crisis Convoy," Commander Peter Gretton recounts the gripping story of leading convoy HX231 through the perilous waters of the North Atlantic during World War II. As the Royal Navy commander responsible for escorting this vital Allied trade convoy from New York to Great Britain in April 1943, Gretton vividly describes the relentless attacks by a German wolf pack of twenty U-boats on the sixty-one merchant ships and six ships of the B7 Escort Group. Despite facing constant danger and tragic losses, Gretton narrates the valiant efforts of the convoy and its defenders, aided by air support, as they battled across hundreds of miles of ocean. Drawing on reports from both sides, Gretton offers an hour-by-hour account of the dramatic events and provides a post-battle analysis that sheds light on the strategies, decisions, and actions that ultimately turned the tide of war in favor of the Allies. "Crisis Convoy" immerses readers in the heart of naval warfare during World War II, delivering a thrilling narrative of courage, sacrifice, and resilience amidst the chaos of battle. About author, Peter Gretton:Gretton joined the Royal Navy as a cadet at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Dartmouth. He served in the aircraft carrier Courageous before seeing action in the cruiser HMS Durban during the Abyssinia crisis and the Spanish Civil War. He led a landing party in Haifa during the Arab rebellion in Palestine. He attended an anti-submarine course at Portland and, on the outbreak of the Second World War, was assigned to the destroyer HMS Vega as first lieutenant. After a short period as first lieutenant in the old destroyer HMS Vega, from September 1939 to April 1940, Gretton was appointed at very short notice as first lieutenant in the large modern destroyer HMS Cossack and saw action at the Second Battle of Narvik during the Norwegian Campaign. He was given command of the old destroyer HMS Sabre in 1941 and served in the North Atlantic. Promoted to lieutenant-commander on 1 June 1942, he was given command of the marginally newer destroyer HMS Wolverine and returned to the Mediterranean. He took part in Operation Pedestal, the Malta convoy operation in August 1942, and sank the Italian submarine Dagabur by ramming. Promoted to commander on 31 December 1942, he was given command of the destroyer HMS Duncan, as Senior Officer Escort to Escort Group B7, based in Derry. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
