Description: 1975 Hostess Baseball Card # 46 Dave Chalk (Hand Cut) - California Angles 1975 Hostess Baseball cards launched one of the most popular and endearing food-issue lines of all-time. What's not to love about mixing Twinkies and baseball cards? And while nostalgia plays a big part in its lasting popularity, the set is strong in its own right thanks to its fairly comprehensive checklist, solid player selection and availability. The 1975 Hostess baseball card set consists of 150 cards that were issued in panels of three cards each on the backs of family-size packages of Hostess cakes. The release marked the first of five consecutive years in which the company would offer such a set. The set consists of 150 cards (three each on 50 different panels) measure approximately 2-1/4” by 3-1/4” individually or 3-1/4” by 7-1/4” as panels of three. A color image dominates much of the card, with the lower portion of the card reserved for a player’s name and team affiliation. The set is anchored by such Hall of Fame talent as Joe Morgan (#5), Don Sutton (#7), Dave Winfield (#37), Carl Yastrzemski (#48), Rollie Fingers (#52), Rod Carew (#56), Nolan Ryan (#58), Bert Blyleven (#74), Tom Seaver (#75), Fergie Jenkins (#116), Mike Schmidt (#133), Carlton Fisk (#143), Brooks Robinson (#144), and Jim Hunter (#148). The key rookie card in this set belongs to Robin Yount (#80), as it was one of the few debut year pieces issued in 1975 for the future Hall of Famer. Error cards include Bill Madlock (#125), who was listed correctly as an infielder and incorrectly as a pitcher, and Burt Hooton (#11) and Doug Rader (#89), both of which had their names misspelled. Some panels and cards are more difficult to find than others as they were issued only on the backs of less popular Hostess products, and include such talent as Hank Aaron (#130), Johnny Bench (#83), Bob Gibson (#119), Reggie Jackson (#88), Phil Niekro (#99), Gaylord Perry (#84), as well as Dave Kingman (#85), Ted Simmons (#95), Bill Buckner (#97), and Rico Petrocelli (#132).With such a large checklist, for an oddball set, it should come as no surprise that there are lots of good players. However, the most intriguing might be Robin Yount. While most collectors don't consider food-issue cards to be rookie cards, this Yount did come out in the same year as his Topps and O-Pee-Chee rookie cards.Because they were on the backs of boxes, many were mis-cut. However, there was space left between cards on the panel, each with a clear set of dotted lines to help the process.Today, full panels can still be found with some regularity. These command a premium over individual cards.Overall, 1975 Hostess Baseball card values are very reasonable. Even clean cards of top players can be found for virtually any budget. Top-level professionally graded panels can get a little high, but that's to be expected from a set from this era. Just be careful of the glow coming from the Twinkies if you come across an unopened box in your travels. But knowing Twinkies, those original cakes might still taste the same as they did when Gerald Ford was in office. We believe that all our listings are 100% Original and Authentic unless otherwise noted.
