Description: Shaw Savill: For all the pomp and bluster in this thirty-two page cruise brochure from 1975, you'd think Shaw Savill was blowing away the competition. In reality, by the end of 1975 both ships highlighted in this brochure were at the breakers being turned into razor blades. Shaw Savill's innovation SOUTHERN CROSS had left the fleet a few years earlier and was enjoying success as the cheap-and-cheerful CALYPSO for Ulysses Line. Left were the NORTHERN STAR of 1962 and a recent recruit from Canadian Pacific, OCEAN MONARCH, formerly the EMPRESS OF ENGLAND. The brochure features color-coded deck plans, sample cabin photos, and several nice port shots for both ships. A full calendar of cruises is shown. But check out OCEAN MONARCH's cruise no. 806, a roundtrip from Southampton to Cadiz and back. Instead of passengers enjoying a Gala Dinner on the last night, July 17th, on that date the ship arrived at Kaohsiung for scrapping. She had sailed for just eighteen years. Even sadder was the fate of the NORTHERN STAR. She finished out her cruise program and then joined her fast-disappearing fleetmate at Kaohsiung on December 11th after a short, mechanically-plagued thirteen years at sea. Excellent condition.
