"The big thing I had to do," he says, "was relearn how to pitch, how to think and act in certain situations of a game. That was the most difficult part of the comeback." He was in the right frame of mind when the 1977 season rolled around. The Dodgers got off to a flying start in the pennant race, and Tommy John was the stopper of the mound staff. All season long, whenever manager Tom Lasorda needed a big game from his pitching crew, John produced. He was there to beat Tom Seaver in his first game with the Cincinnati Reds. Later in the season, when Los Angeles clinched the NL West divisional title, John was on the mound against the San Francisco Giants. Tommy went on to win 20 games in 1977, the first time he had achieved that total in a major league career that dates back to 1964 when he broke in with the Chicago White Sox. Coming Back There are comebacks and then there are comebacks. Many athletes have had off years or injury-laden seasons and then rebounded with an above- average season the next year. But the Los Angeles Dodgers' Tommy John really demonstrates how amazing a comeback can be. On July 17, 1974, with a won-lost record of 13-3, John was pitching in Dodger Stadium against the Montreal Expos, when he ruptured a ligament in the elbow of his left arm, his throwing arm. The injury required reconstructive operation that involved taking a ten- don from his right arm and inserting it into the left elbow. Some of the medical procedures employed had never before been performed. Even then, doctors. were not sure the operation had been a success. Tommy had to sit out the whole 1975 season, following a second operation to set everything in order. During that year-long layoff, his arm withered and friends wondered if he would ever regain full use of it, much less ever pitch again. But pitch he did, appearing in 31 games for the Dodgers in 1976, winning 10 and losing a like number. It was a diffi- cult season, the 6 ft 3 in, 185 lb John John came back from an operation to lead the Dodgers to a pennant 1978, Editions Rencontre S.A., Lausanne A Photo Focus on Sports Tommy John had shown everyone exactly what the word comeback means.
