Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) and His Post-1 798 Journals Benjamin Henry Latrobe wrote the journals that comprise this volume during a span of years (1799-1820) that marked the most creative and productive period of his career as an architect and engineer. When he moved from Richmond to Philadelphia in December 1798 to assume direction of his first great commission, the Bank of Pennsylvania (1798-1801),1 the pace of both Latrobe's professional and personal lives so accelerated that he generally did not enjoy the luxury of free time for extensive journalizing that had characterized his Virginia sojourn. For this and perhaps other reasons, Latrobe apparently wrote slightly fewer journals— or memorandum books as he sometimes termed them-after leaving Richmond than he had during the previous three years. Although the pattern of his journal composition was altered, there was no decline in his acute perception of America and its people, or in the insights they provide into Latrobe's character, personality, and range of taste and interests.? The years 1799 to 1820 were indeed busy ones for Latrobe. In this period he experienced professional recognition and then a precipitous decline in his financial condition, and finally the gratifying sense of renewed accomplishment in New Orleans, before his untimely death in September 1820. Throughout these years, Latrobe led a full and happy private life, which, while not without illness and sorrow, was enriched by the most satisfying of marriages, a warm and supportive family environment, and a wide circle of loyal, generous, and talented friends. I. Dates given for BHL's architectural and engineering projects specify those years during which he and his staff were associated with the work. 2. Those readers who are unacquainted with the complexities of the great architect's life and the dimension of his achievements may wish to consult the biographical sketch in the general introduction to this edition.
