UPI ARCHIVES JUNE 15, 1992 Reardon sets saves record BOSTON -- Jeff Reardon couldn't have asked for a better situation to set the all-time saves record Monday night, and the Boston closer wasted no time in stamping his mark. Facing the heart of the New York order with a 1-0 lead, the Massachusetts native set down the rival Yankees easily in the ninth inning to preserve the Red Sox' victory. Of the 16 pitches he threw in the inning, 12 went for strikes. 'This was the hardest save of the year for me,' said Reardon, who broke Rollie Fingers' record with his 342nd save. 'I just wanted to get it over with. Those were three tough hitters and that also made it special.' Reardon, who posted his 15th save of the season, took the mound in the ninth in relief of starter John Dopson. He got Mel Hall to ground out and Roberto Kelly to fly out, allowed a single to Don Mattingly, then struck out Kevin Maas to break the tie with Fingers. 'He was so excited when he got out there,' catcher Tony Pena said. 'I told him just to throw hard. On the base hit by Mattingly, it was a fastball down. I told him if they get anything, make them hit it to right -- don't let them have left field.' As Maas swung and missed for the final out, Reardon pumped his fist as he did a pirouette off the mound, where he was surrounded by congratulatory teammates. Tom Brunansky and Frank Viola hoisted Reardon on their shoulders and carried him to the edge of the box seats, where he shared a hug with wife. As Reardon made his way back to the Boston dugout, teammates dumped a cooler of Gatorade on him. The adrenaline began pumping for Reardon as early as the fourth inning of a scoreless game. 'My heart was pumping from the fourth inning on,' he said. 'I wanted the ball. I realized how big a thing this is and it was special to get it in Fenway in front of my family and friends.' It was also special because Reardon got to set the mark against the Yankees, Boston's long-time rival. That fact also wasn't lost on Maas. 'I would have loved to have spoiled it, but congratulations to him,' Maas said. 'He threw me four curveballs. I saw them well and a couple were good pitches to hit but you have to give him credit, he was effective.' Reardon, who set a Red Sox saves record last year with 40, has 342 saves in his 14th major-league season. Fingers posted his 341 saves in 17 seasons. Dopson, 3-2, scattered five hits and two walks over eight innings of work, striking out two in his best outing of the year. In his last start at Baltimore, he went 7 1-3 innings in a 4-1 Red Sox victory, giving up four hits and one walk. 'My control was the best it has been since coming back,' Dopson said. 'I kept everything down and away.' Yankees starter Scott Sanderson, 4-5, gave up three hits in posting his first complete game of the year, striking out four and walking two. 'I was more balanced and all of my pitches were working for me,' Sanderson said. 'It's tough when one pitch beats you on a night like this.' Phil Plantier scored the only run when he led off the fifth inning for the Red Sox by hitting his fourth home run of the season and second in the last three games. Thirteen of Plantier's last 24 hits have been for extra bases, with 10 doubles and three home runs. The homer, which cleared the wall in left on a 2-0 count, was his second of the season against Sanderson. The first came on opening day in Yankee Stadium on Plantier's first at-bat. Sanderson had retired the first 14 Boston batters without a hit before the home run. The only inning in which Sanderson faced trouble was the first. With one out, he hit Luis Rivera with a pitch and walked Wade Boggs. But the Yankees got out of the inning when Mike Greenwell flied to center and Ellis Burks bounced into an inning-ending forceout. Reardon thanked Joe Torre, his manager with the New York Mets in 1979, for making him into a relief pitcher. 'We had Neil Allen on that club in the setup role, so the pressure wasn't all on me,' Reardon said. 'I never dreamed when I got my first save that I would go this far.' He also pitched for Montreal and Minnesota before joining the Red Sox, but never lost his consistency. He is the only major-league pitcher with 10 straight seasons of 20 or more saves and was named Reliever of the Decade for the 1980s by the Rolaids Relief Man Award program. 'I think I can go for another four years,' Reardon said. 'If I can do that I'll be on top for a long time.' Reardon, who posted his 15th save of the season, pitched the ninth inning in relief of John Dopson. He got Mel Hall to ground out and Roberto Kelly to fly out, allowed a single to Don Mattingly, then struck out Kevin Maas to break the tie with Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers. As Maas swung and missed for the final out, Reardon pumped his fist as he did a pirouette off the mound, where he was surrounded by congratulatory teammates.
