1986 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

Description: This is a very nice 1986 Westfalia Wolfsburg edition that I've had for over 17 years. The Wolfsburg edition did not have the sink or stove, or the cabinetry that encompassed them, but did have a clunky refrigerator placed right where you open the side door. These antique refrigerators all died years ago. I much prefer the Wolfsburg editions and the Multivans over the full campers. The stove, fridge, and sink from 1980 technology? - how was your phone working in 1980.. All that stuff is dead weight, but I have to admit it is all very cute. But who would want to go through the hassle to use all that outdated stuff anyway. What you will use, the bed. The Wolfburg's and the Multi's have a bigger bed and more usable storage space. There are so many options now for small portable Fridge/Freezers that use a fraction of the energy, and work 10 times better than the older units from 1980. And Cooking, you do not want to cook inside your Westfalia unless it is absolutely necessary or just warming something up, what a mess. Bring a fold up picnic table, and cook anything you want outside under your awning. I remember going to Alaska in 1985 and cooking Salmon inside my Westy, big mistake, even hamburgers make a big greasy smelly mess. There is only one thing that I really do miss from the full camper, the 2 front seats swivel and the passenger seat can be turned completely around to comfortably face the inside of the van - that's my favorite place to sit. You can buy these bases and install them if you like that feature as I do. Anyway,.. I have had over 75 Westfalia's that I have fixed up or restored over the last 40 years, but for some reason I abandoned this one to the backyard about 16 years ago and moved on to other projects. When I first got this Westfalia I spent two weeks on the body work, and I block sanded it for 3 days. Check out the pictures, see how straight this thing is. Then I sent it to my painter for a $2000 paint job, and it came back fabulous, most of the paint still looks great. Then I got started on a Porsche 356 restoration and then on to different Westfalia's and other projects while this one just sat in the back yard for years. Well, here is where we are today, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. "The Good" is this Westfalia runs great, absolutely superb. Starts easily and goes through it's warm up cycle smoothly. This Westy drives out great with no hesitation and great power, the transmission shifts easy and smoothly, and has a nice easy to engage clutch. This Westfalia feels great out on the road, nice and stable. This has newer Hankook RA08 185 14 tires which are adequate for this vehicle, but I do understand the tire debate within the Westfalia community and I realize this is not your optimum choice. This had a factory longblock installed 38,000 miles ago, but that was in 2000, No leaks though. I have attached a picture of the receipt. A new ECU was installed around the same time. I just replaced the coolant distribution pipe, the fuel pump, and a battery to get this ready to sell, but I'm done. I'm selling this for someone else to finish. This is your baby now!.. The interior of this Westfalia is very nice and clean as you can see by the pictures. The cabinets and under the seat storage is also very nice. The last picture you see, is taken at night with the over head light on, it's nice to play games and just hang out. "The Bad", every hose and belt is over 17 years old and needs to be replaced. The muffler also needs to be replaced, it isn't loud, just shot. This also needs a new pop top. They are easy to install but do take a few days to get everything done and you need 4 people to remove and replace the top. I have the new canvas I bought a few years ago that I am including, and I have a new mechanism for the skylight that I'm including too, I have some other odds and ends I will include as well. "The Ugly" The dash pad has multiple cracks, hence the dash cover. There are some rust spots that have started to appear along the lower windshield rubber as you can see in the pictures, and also the panel along the front bumper. No rust on the back window which always seems to be a problem, odd. Some paint fading on the top of the rear window. There is a rust spot below the right rear window and on the fender seam on the rear left flare. There is absolutely no rust on the undercarriage what so ever. This Westfalia has always been in California, so no salt corrosion or rust. A good bodyman can repair this minor rust and match the paint perfectly. Most of the paint still looks great and has plenty of life left. I'm putting this for sale at $16,950 OBO. Please call me if you have any questions 619 925-3174 Jim..
