Ornament descriptions: 1990 THE BLUE ROOM This ornament honors Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States, 1837–41. The Congress gave him $20,000 for repairs to the mansion. In addition to installing central heating in the main rooms, he ordered the state parlors redecorated. Van Buren wanted the oval parlor to be blue and it has remained so ever since. 1991 WHITE CHARGER This ornament honors William Henry Harrison, 9th President of the United States, 1841. The White Charger ornament honors President William Henry Harrison, who died just 32 days after his inauguration. On March 4, 1841—inauguration day—Harrison mounted a beautiful white charger, and went to the Capitol with a large procession to take the presidential oath of office. 1992 BICENTENNIAL OF THE WHITE HOUSE CORNERSTONE The first building stone of the White House was set in 1792, probably in the early summer. And the cornerstone was officially laid a few months later, on October 13. One face of the ornament depicts the text of the cornerstone, as published in the press at the time it was laid. On the opposite face, reproduced in full color, is an 1848 lithograph of the north side of the White House, based on a watercolor by August Kollner. 1993 MAY AND SEPTEMBER This ornament honors John Tyler, 10th President of the United States, 1841–45. Tyler was the first president to marry while in the White House. His second wife, Julia Gardiner Tyler, was 30 years his junior. Her portrait—the first of a comprehensive White House collection of portraits of the first ladies—has for this ornament been reduced to resemble a miniature portrait of the sort given as gifts to special friends and loved ones at the time. 1994 IMPERIAL CHRISTMAS This ornaments honors James K. Polk, 11th President of the United States, 1845–49. The cameo at the center features an illustration of the President and Mrs. Polk on the South Lawn of the White House while they are serenaded by the United States Marine Band. 1995 A PATRIOTIC CHRISTMAS This ornament honors Zachary Taylor, 12th President of the United States, 1849–50. The patriotic theme of this ornament is inspired by the ceremonies that President Taylor attended on the grounds of the Washington Monument on July 4, 1850. 1996 THE PRESIDENTIAL SEAL Honoring Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States, 1850–53. The earliest documented Presidential Seal was sketched by Fillmore and sent to Edward Stabler, a nationally renown seal engraver. The seal of the President of the United States is combined with an image of the North Portico of the White House. 1997 THE WHITE HOUSE GROUNDS Honoring Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States, 1853–57. The design of the ornament is inspired by the renovations and redecoration of the White House in 1853 and 1854. The fancy gilt frame, based upon the elaborate gold-leafed frames of two huge mirrors Pierce hung in the state parlors, symbolizes the rich character of the new furnishings 1998 THE AMERICAN BALD EAGLE AND SHIELD The 1998 Official White House Christmas Ornament commemorates James Buchanan with a depiction of the eagle and shield insignia that first appeared on the glassware President Andrew Jackson purchased for the White House in 1829. President Buchanan was the last president to use the Jackson pattern. A wreath of white magnolia blossoms and red camellias surround the white porcelain eagle. 1999 PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S PORTRAIT The 1999 official White House Ornament honors President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, who served from 1861 to 1865. It features a depiction of his official White House portrait by George P.A. Healy. The portrait was commissioned by Congress in 1869 and hangs today over the fireplace in the State Dining Room. The hinged frame surrounding the portrait was adapted from a Civil War era frame in the White House collection.
