1991 Press Photo Bob Alexander Persian Gulf War - RRV75813

Description:   Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1991 Press Photo Bob Alexander Persian Gulf War - RRV75813 Photo measures 10 x 8 in. Bob Alexander speaks to the Persian Gulf War protesters in Lansing. The Persian Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – February 28, 1991), commonly referred to as simply the Gulf War, was a war waged by a U.N.-authorized coalition force from thirty-four nations led by the United States, against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of the State of Kuwait. This war has also been referred to as Operation Desert Storm for the operational name of the military response[13][not in citation given] (see section 12.1 Operational Names below), the First Gulf War, Gulf War I, or the Iraq War,[14][15][16] before the term became identified with the 2003 Iraq War which is also referred to as Desert Storm. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi troops that began 2 August 1990 was met with international condemnation, and brought immediate economic sanctions against Iraq by members of the UN Security Council. U.S. President George H. W. Bush deployed American forces to Saudi Arabia, and urged other countries to send their own forces to the scene. An array of nations joined the Coalition. The great majority of the military forces in the coalition were from the United States, with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Egypt as leading contributors, in that order. Around US$36 billion of the US$60 billion cost was paid by Saudi Arabia.[17] The war was marked by the beginning of live news on the front lines of the fight, with the primacy of the U.S. network CNN.[18][19] The war has also earned the nickname Video Game War after the daily broadcast images on board the American bombers during Operation Desert Storm.[20][21] The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with an aerial bombardment on 17 January 1991. This was followed by a ground assault on 23 February. This was a decisive victory for the coalition forces, who liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraqi territory. The coalition ceased their advance, and declared a cease-fire 100 hours after the ground campaign started. Aerial and ground combat was confined to Iraq, Kuwait, and areas on the border of Saudi Arabia. However, Iraq launched Scud missiles against coalition military targets in Saudi Arabia and against Israel.
