It was issued in 1993. It pictures Juan Sánchez Ramírez, a Dominican military and political leader who played a prominent role in the country's War of Independence. Sánchez Ramírez was born in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic, in 1800. He joined the rebellion against Haitian rule in 1843 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Dominican army. He is best known for his decisive victory at the “Battle of Sabana Larga” in 1844, which effectively sealed the Haitian defeat and secured Dominican independence.
