Description: This is an exquisite custom 1996 Case XX custom 97LSS Sharktooth re-handled knife! It has been professionally re-handled in agatized indonesian fossil coral that gives it a beautiful and exotic look. The coral looks amazing on here! Note on the handles: Indonesian fossil coral is a very hard material at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale which is equivalent to the hardness of steel, so these handles won't easily chip or scratch. Also this dense material shares a comparable expansion rate to that of brass or steel, so you won't later have gapping or cracking issues common with typical handle materials. They have been professionally handcrafted and installed (small shop operation in the USA) using a proprietary anchor bond matrix system which creates a dual-surface bond between the stone and the metal providing unmatched durability. Fossil Coral Geological Information: It is important to understand “fossil coral” is a natural stone formed from ancient corals. It should not be mistaken for protected and endangered coral reef from the modern oceans of today. Of the varieties of fossilized corals found throughout the geologic record, exquisitely detailed specimens from the mountains of Indonesia are most unique and beautiful. The volcanic islands of Indonesia are host to numerous deposits of fossil coral. The Barisan Mountain Range, along the western boundary of the Island of Sumatra, hosts a rare and ornate suite of fossils. Miocene age (approx 20 million year old) coralline reefs and near shore forests were preserved by burial in volcanic sediments rich in minerals including iron, manganese and silica. Thru a combination of processes the full pattern and character of the original coral life forms have been preserved in great detail. In Indonesia, entire coral heads are completely preserved and appear just as they did 20 million years ago although their density is much changed by replacement and infill with silica, iron, manganese and other minerals. The fact that forces of nature have created these stones in the image of once living creatures, assures that, although all have similar physical properties, every piece will appear unique unto its viewer and no two pieces will be exactly alike. All these features add to the appeal of Indonesian Agatized Fossil Coral and its ever increasing popularity around the world today by curators and collectors. In excellent used condition! Blade is full, has smooth action, locks up nicely and has no wobble. The original faded etching has been removed. Bolsters show no damage and look great. The coral handles have excellent fit and high polish finish, with no damage, chips or cracks. Note as with any natural material the handles will have differences side to side. Please see photos. This magnificent one-of-a-kind knife with beautiful 20 million year old handles, offering both beauty and performance, would be a great addition to any knife collection!
