Original cloth hardcover with gilt titling to the spine in a graphic Dust Jacket. "Set in London and the idyllic countryside, the narrative tracks the interlocking passions of four men. As each character falls successively under the spell of love or drugs, country living or urban glamour, The Spell unfurls into a richly witty picture of modern gay life...and of all human affairs of the heart. In 2011, Alan Hollinghurst was given the Whitehead Award, in celebration of his lifetime of work and commitment to fostering queer culture. "I think Alan Hollinghurst is my favourite living writer. I think he’s extraordinary." - Edmund White Condition: Near Fine clean, tight and bright hardcover with a small square glue-residue spot to the inside back cover and some page toning as is common in a Near Fine bright graphic Dust Jacket with light edgewear. Additional Information: Alan James Hollinghurst FRSL (born 1954) is an English novelist, poet, short story writer and translator. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1989 Somerset Maugham Award for "The Swimming Pool Library", the 1994 James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction with "The Folding Star") and the 2004 Booker Prize for "The Line of Beauty". Hollinghurst is openly gay and lives in London. Although he now lives with his partner Paul Mendez, Hollinghurst previously said: "I'm not at all easy to live with. I wish I could integrate writing into ordinary social life, but I don't seem to be able to. I could when I started [writing]. I suppose I had more energy then. Now I have to isolate myself for long periods." Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
