Tiny nick to one edge; label bearing date worn down to the residue, though text is legible overall (the "N" of "Nov" lacking but easily inferred). Near Fine. A turn-of-the-century polished souvenir shell cut in the shape of a napkin holder, with an ornately-lettered "Los Angeles Cal" carved in relief to top and a small dated label to interior.We speculate that the shell was purchased from one of the city's curio dealers, such as the popular Winkler's Curios, a seemingly short-lived shop located at 346 S. Broadway. We find a November 26, 1899 advertisement in The Los Angeles Times for Winkler's "Holiday Goods | In California woods and shell novelties . . . Abalone shell jewelry, spoons, card receivers, shells and curios of all kinds." Several similar ads for "California Souvenirs in Shells, Shell and Wood Novelties" offered by Winkler's appear in the paper between 1899 - 1900.
