Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore!This listing is for a beautiful English 19th Century sewing box, c. 1870-1880. This attractive rosewood box has an elaborately inlaid floral decoration on top with banded trim. The upper edge of the box is also decorated with inlaid banding and the box has great original patina. The interior top has a carved wooden band around the edges with a gold embossed background. There is a lift-out drawer with fitted sections, one that holds four slide out spools of thread and on the opposite side is four slide out thread winders. In the center is an open section with curved pin/needle holders on each side and above is three lidded compartments. The center lifts to expose a padded pin cushion and those on each side have lift lids with small bone finial handles. Below this lift-out drawer is an open storage compartment with wooden supports on each side to hold the drawer in place. This is a high quality hand crafted box with mitered corners, has dovetailed corners on the lift-out drawer and sits on four squat round feet. There is a wooden key escutcheon with locking mechanism, however, we do not have the original key. The hinges are tight and the box opens and closes properly.Measures 5 1/4" high, 12 1/8" long and 7 1/4" wide. Weighs 3.8 pounds. This nice box is in very good to excellent Estate condition with the only issue noted is that the lid has a slight concave curve in the center which causes the front and back of the sides to not meet closely when closed leaves a slight gap in these areas. The box is over 100 years old and this minor issue has little affect on the attractiveness of this great box which otherwise reflects only minor signs of normal wear.
