Description: First Edition, 1945, Hardback book: We Were Wasps - The story by Winifred Wood. Illustrations by Dorothy Swain. 196 pages. Please read this interesting description to learn more about this book and the previous owner! This book would make a very special gift for someone who is most interested in women in WWII, or writing a book about them, or women in aviation, women in the military. RARE. Approx measurements9.25" tall6.25" wide1/2" thick Pre-owned, ok to good. Cover shows wear, outside of pages is a little darker, pages are good but I'd handle carefully as this is an older book. There is writing on the inside front cover: Previous owners name, address and date, opposite page is gift inscription - Happy Landings to my very Favorite Chum..... Betty from... Doug. The pages inside the book are all good, just old. Illustrations are funny and cartoon like. SEE PHOTOS. This is a great book! By the way, Betty Morton mentioned above is in the International Women's Air & Space Museum (IWASM) in Ohio which was established in 1976 with the mission to collect, preserve, and showcase the history and culture of women in all areas of aviation and aerospace: educate people of the world about their contributions: and inspire future generations by bringing the history to life. (this was taken, with respect, from their website). Betty was a Woman Airforce Service Pilot (WASP). This has been in my dad's library for years. He served as a volunteer for many years with Honor Flight and has an amazing collection of WWII books - many written by those who served. This one is such an interesting book about some of the trailblazing women who, very early in our country's history and before this was considered normal, served in our military. The WASP's program was introduced in 1943 and then discontinued and disbanded, to the sadness of the women, in December 1944. There is a chapter that talks about this and the affect it had on the women pilots. Neat little FYI: The author, Winifred "Winnie" Wood, is sister to Jane Wood who is the mother of former Attorney General Janet Reno. Her writing style is so easy and pleasant it really draws you into her stories and make you feel you are there. This is such a delightful book if you're interested in the things I mentioned above.
