Description: Raggedy Andy Stories - Introducing the Little Rag Brother of Raggedy Ann. Written and Illustrated by Johnny Gruelle 1920 FIRST EDITION. Published by M.A. Donohue Company, Chicago. Measures 9 1/8in. X 6 1/8in. This is a reprint of the Volland Raggedy Andy Stories, the second book in the well-known series of books written about the Raggedy Ann rag-doll character and her friends! This is the introduction to Raggedy Ann's brother, Andy. It was written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle (1880 - 1930), who was an American artist and political cartoonist, as well as a children's book illustrator and author. The books of 'The Raggedy Ann Series' all feature the protagonist, Raggedy Ann, chronicling her adventures with friends. This story is accentuated by Gruelle's signature illustrations, which are bright, charming, and colorful. “Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll and he drew a face on it. From his bookshelf, he pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, and combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphan Annie." He said, "Why don t we call her Raggedy Ann?" Marcella died at age 13 after being vaccinated at school for smallpox without her parents' consent. Authorities blamed a heart defect, but her parents blamed the vaccination. Gruelle became an opponent of vaccination, and the Raggedy Ann doll was used as a symbol by the anti-vaccination movement. This work is the second book in the "Raggedy Ann and Andy Series." This book features illustrated endpapers, 22 full-page color plates, as well as numerous in-text color illustrations on nearly every page! It is in incredibly good vintage condition considering its age and young readership. This would still be an excellent addition to a Raggedy Ann collection or any other collection of classic children's books! Contents: “How Raggedy Andy Came. The Nursery Dance. The Spinning Wheel. The Taffy-Pull. The Rabbit Chase. The New Tin Gutter. Doctor Raggedy Andy. Raggedy Andy's Smile. The Wooden Horse. Making ‘Angels’ In The Snow”. Condition: Near Fine The front and back cover has a colorful picture of Raggedy Andy standing by a picture of Raggedy Ann. The back of the book has the same picture as the front. There is a great colorful picture on the inside front and back cover of Raggedy Ann and Andy sitting near water surrounded by flowers, with a castle in the middle of the water on a hill. There are beautiful colorful pictures throughout the book (see photos). If you collect old children's books and remember Raggedy Ann and Andy, then you surely will want to add this book to your collection. Great Collectible! A classic!
