SEMPER FI Marine motto ALWAYS faithful GOD, COUNTRY, CORPS! SEMPER FI! AND YES WE ARE STILL ONE NATION UNDER GOD! The Commandant of the Marine Corps' Dear Marines,Before I get too senile I wanted to relate a story to you that happened to me last spring. In May I went on an all veteran fishing trip to Sitka, Alaska. Every year this fishing lodge puts on this trip where the price of admission is a Purple Heart. There were 20 younger folks, mostly Army, and me. The lodge invites one older guy every year to let the younger kids know that life goes on after being wounded and in most cases forced from active duty. Once the kids found out that I was one of them, I was treated like one of the guys. They even took turns making sure I was okay and could handle the boat and hauling in the big ones.I was assigned a boat with three other guys. One of the fellows was an Army E-7 with two tours in Afghanistan under his belt. He told me the story of his last tour when he was the Plt. Sgt. of a Company that manned heavy, mine clearing equipment, sort of like a mine sweeper on wheels. The base they were stationed at in country was a combined Army/Marine Corps facility. One day they got word that the Army grunts were pulling out but the heavy equipment operators were going under the command of the Marines. On his first patrol with Marine grunts as security, they were ambushed. For a split second there was fear: what would the Marines do? The Marines pushed past his vehicle, got fire superiority, and quickly ran the enemy to the ground, killing every last one. My fishing buddy said he never saw so many guys respond so fast, actually sprinting to get into the fight. After that he loved being with the Marines. He even bought me a beer to toast the Corps with. Kind of brings a tear to my eye to retell that story and see the reverence this soldier had for my Marines.Semper Fi,John SATURDAY 10-23-04 My wife Hilda and I were very honored and humbled that we were invited to attend the Marine Birthday Ball in San Diego, with the West Coast Marine Bands, as we celebrated the 229 years of honorable and distinguished service of our Corps....what a great time we all had! Thank you to the Marines of the MCRD Band.... I am aware that this may not mean much to anyone else, but to Marines, its our birthday, which is 10 November 1775, and its celebration every year, is a BIG deal! Marines know, remember, and celebrate our birthday unlike any other service. Tradition is important to us. Every Marine can tell you the birth date of our Corps. It is ingrained from the first weeks of Boot Camp and OCS. This is a tradition we will proudly carry forward. You see, with Marines there is a certain bond, a commonality, an esprit de corps that is perhaps summed up in the Latin phrase Marines for generations have used — Semper Fidelis. This term means "Always Faithful," and is often shortened to Semper Fi. Being a former Marine, the pride and honor of being a Marine never leaves you. Another phrase often used is, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine and There is no such thing as an X Marine." For those of you who are trying to understand, you really cannot except to notice a lifetime change in your love one! He will stand a little taller and carry himself with a swagger that assures all, that everything is going to be okay....this will stay with him for life! The ceremony began with the march of colors and the United States national anthems, followed by an invocation The annual reading of the 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune’s birthday message, was read, followed by current Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Michael W. Hagee’s message posted on two wide screens. The Commanding Officer of H & HS Company MCRD San Diego then addressed the audience. She was great and stirred the emotions of us all! The cake cutting ceremony took place presenting the first cake to the Guest of Honor and then the Oldest and youngest Marines present. The colors were marched off sharply followed by the playing of Anchors Away and the Marine Corps Hymn... We were then served dinner and a night of dancing and exchanging sea stories! Happy Birthday Marines...May God bless the USA & the MARINES! Semper Fi Vic Veturis HERE'S HEALTH TO YOU AND TO OUR CORPS! FOR HONOR, DUTY, & COUNTRY GOD! COUNTRY! CORPS! SEMPER FI! HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE COIN During World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scions attending colleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war. In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze carrying the squadron emblem for every member of his squadron. He himself carried his medallion in a small leather pouch around his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallions, the pilot's aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except for the small leather pouch around his neck. In the meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front. Taking advantage of a bombardment that night, he escaped. However, he was without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding German patrols and reached the front lines. With great difficulty, he crossed no-man's land. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost. Unfortunately, saboteurs had plagued the French in this sector. They sometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Not recognizing the young pilot's American accent, the French thought him a saboteur and made ready to execute him. Just in time, he remembered his leather pouch containing the medallion. He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners. His French captors recognized the squadron insignia on the medallion and delayed long enough for him to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him, they gave him a bottle of wine. Back at his squadron, it became a tradition to ensure that all members carried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplished through a challenge in the following manner: a challenger would ask to see the coin. If the challenged could not produce his coin, he was required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged him. If the challenged member produced his coin, the challenging member was required to pay for the drink. This tradition continued throughout the war and for many years after while surviving members of the squadron were still alive. The fighting men and women of the 48th Intelligence Squadron proudly continue this tradition. THE CHALLENGE Some Organizations even have regulations regarding Military Coins. Here is an example. A 'Coin Check' consists of a challenge and a response. 1. RULES: a. The challenge is initiated by drawing your coin, holding it in the air by whatever means possible and state, scream, shout or otherwise verbally acknowledge that you are initiating a coin check. Another, but less vocal method is to firmly place it on the bar, table, Or floor (this should produce an audible noise which can be easily heard by those being challenged, but try not to leave a permanent imprint). If you accidentally drop your coin and it makes an audible sound upon impact, then you have just "accidentally" initiated a coin check. (This is called paying the price for improper care of your coin." b. The response consists of all those persons being challenged drawing their coin in a like manner (other organizational coins are invalid). You must produce a coin with YOUR UNIT'S LOGO on it. c. If you are challenged and are unable to properly respond, you must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and the group being challenged. d. If everyone being challenged responds in the correct manner, the challenger must buy a round of drinks for all those people he challenged. e. Failure to buy a round is a despicable crime and will require that you turn-in your Coin to the issuing agency. 2. Coin checks are permitted, ANY TIME, ANY PLACE'. (Keep OPSEC in mind, be smart!) 3. There are no exceptions to the rules. They apply to those clothed or unclothed. At the time of the challenge, you are permitted one-step and an arms reach to locate your coin. If you still cannot reach it -- SORRY ABOUT THAT! 4. A Coin is a coin. Coins attached on belt buckles are considered "belt buckles." Coins on key chains are considered "key chains." Coins placed in a "holder/clasp" and worn around the neck like a necklace are valid and are considered a coin. We can also make a special ebay auction to make your custom coin too! Cemetery Escort Duty WARNING....DO NOT READ.....YOUR MONITOR WILL TEAR UP! I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day. Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high. I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell. I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's going to spend an hour, and for this old Marine, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in. Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey's in time. I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in Marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery. I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's squint. 'Ma'am,may I assist you in any way?' She took long enough to answer. 'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.' 'My pleasure, ma'am.' Well, it wasn't too much of a lie. She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?' ' Vietnam, ma'am. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.' She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.' I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.' She smiled and winked at me. 'Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let's get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines I'd like to see one more time.' 'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.' She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flowers out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn't quite make out. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918. She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943. She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944. She paused for a second. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done' I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am. Take your time.' She looked confused. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.' I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.' 'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.' She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970. She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out. 'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.' Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?' She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephen was my uncle, Stanley was my husband, Larry and Darrel were our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.' She stopped. Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know. She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully. I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car. 'Get to the 'Out' gate quick. I have something I've got to do.' Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us there down the service road. We beat her. She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet. 'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.' I humped it across the drive to the other post. When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best Gunny's voice: 'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!' I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress uniform standing at attention and a salute that would make his DI proud. She drove through that gate with two old worn-out Marines giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice. I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac. Instead of 'The End,'...just think of 'Taps.' As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas. Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.' Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy. 'In God We Trust.' Sorry about your monitor; it made mine blurry too!
