Description: A very nice pair of large stone carvings of Guanyin. They are on custom bronze bases. They were clearly lamps in the 1920’s or 1930’s when it was popular to turn Chinese vases and carvings into lamps in Europe and America. They made a nice mirrored pair. Likely carved by different individuals in the same workshop. One is a bit more finely carved than the other. One seems to have gotten a bit more wear than the other and has some light scuffing. I didn’t see any chips or cracks but forgive me if I missed anything tiny and insignificant. They stand approximately 10” tall including their bases. They are solid pale green stone. The stone really has a jade like appearance but I assume it’s a variety of soapstone or some other type of native stone. Could be jade though I suppose. Since they were made into lamps in the early 20th century and since the carving is good but not amazing I’m guessing these were carved around 1830-1920. Late Qing to early Republic. I’m not an expert though. They came out of a good old Boston collection. A guy that had a great eye and had been hunting for good antiques for around fifty years or so. The carving look much better in person than in my photos I think. The background color and lighting in my photos didn’t do them justice. They’ll ship ASAP! Check out my other listings. I have a wonderful Kangxi vase listed in auction format. The auction ends the night of 6/22.
