2 Original Abstract Paintings Attributed to George Cavallon

Description: Giorgio Cavallon (1904-1989) is a well listed American artist who was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group. He was a pioneer abstract expressionist painter who was a favorite artist of Jackson Pollock. In 1926, after arriving in New York City from Italy, he began studies at the prestigious National Academy of Design. Later on, he studied at Hans Hofmann's School of Fine Art. The influence of Hoffmann on Cavallon's painterly style is obvious. He was Arshile Gorky's assistant at the WPA Federal Arts Project in NYC in 1934. Cavallon's works are characterized by colorful shapes and splashes that blend in with one another or contrast with one another - often against a white background. His work can be found in many important collections including the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard; The Museum of Modern Art in N.Y.; The Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York; and the Whitney Museum of Art in NYC. For sale are two original abstract watercolors that are each signed and dated "G. Cavallon - 70". Each painting measures 9" high and 12" across. These are watercolors on stiff textured art paper. Primary colors are yellow, rose, green, brown, dark red and blue. The two paintings are very similar to each other and were probably completed at the same time, possibly as studies for intended larger oil paintings. The backs of the 2 paintings are blank (photo 6). There is no paperworkto authenticate these two works as definitely by the hand of Giorgio Cavallon. The paper looks decades old and the style and color choices are definitely Cavallon's. The signatures on the bottom right of each painting closely resemble the signatures of George Cavallon's works that have been deemed authentic. Without a paper trail however, these two little beauties can only be "attributed" to Cavallon.
