Description: Two embossed, gilded holiday postcards from the early 1900s featuring Elves! Fun. Both are divided back, which places their dates between 1907 and 1915 (according to the Smithsonian archives at siarchives.si.edu/history/featured-topics/postcard/postcard-history). These two are part of a collection, 16 lots in total. Please follow my store for the latest listings! 1) "With Hearty Christmas Greetings," lithographed. Divided back, with a brief message from a grandma to a grandson. No postage, unposted. There are partial numbers stamped in purple on the far upper right. Front design features 3 elves in the middle of a snowball fight, framed by & holly & gold borders. The background is laced with blue lines, which I guess represent ice? A snowy bank? There is also an inset: at bucolic scene of sheep, a sheepherder and a sunset. Printed in green, red, gold, blue, white and pink. The back is marked with "Printed in Germany...Trademark 2169." According to The Postcard Album site, "Publishing company ‘Gottschalk, Dreyfuss & Davis’, London, Munich, New York ... GDD cards show a series number together with “Printed ... or Produced in Germany” imprint and their “Little Girl dropping card into Pillar Box” logo." The logo has the words Trade Mark underneath. (tpa-project.info/html/body_winsch_printers) CONDITIONFront: Corners are very slightly bent. The embossing is wonderful, as is the gilt. Overall in really nice condition, though there is a smudge or two. See photos. Back:Embossing is deep, nice, crisp. Card is in nice shape. Handwritten note adds to it - gotta love that old handwriting! 2) "A Happy New Year." Features 3 elves ringing in the New Year, postmarked 1913.Beautiful embossed design, gold leaf gilt.Multicolored in blue, pink, green, black and white. The back is marked simply Post Card, with no maker's mark. There is some handwriting, an address, and a canceled 1 cent stamp. CONDITIONFront: Corners are slightly bent, with some surface wear.A few faint small, surface cracks on both long edges. Back: Graphite smudges, as the handwriting is in pencil. Overall in good to very good condition? but I am not a postcard grader. To learn more see warwickandwarwick.com/news/guides/how-to-value-old-postcards.
