Taylor refused any mail with postage due, including the official letter nominating him. After a ceremony at the Washington Monument, he fell ill from the heat and died five days later, the second president to die in office and in the White House. Some historians believe his death was caused by arsenic poisoning. His body was exhumed, but an abnormal level was not found. Taylor was the first president not previously elected to office. Taylor was a career officier in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero for his victories in the Mexican-American War.
