Baden-Württemberg is a state in southwest Germany bordering France and Switzerland. The Black Forest, known for its evergreen scenery and traditional villages, lies in the mountainous southwest. Stuttgart, the capital, is home to Wilhelma, a royal estate turned zoo and gardens. Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have headquarters and museums there. The 19th-century Hohenzollern Castle sits in the Swabian Alps to the south. The federal states series consists of a total of 16 different €2 coins, each one bearing a unique symbol or building specific to the respective state. The series began in 2006 and a new coin is minted each year, in order of the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament representing the federal states). The reverse of the coin shows Maulbronn Abbey. Founded in 1147, Maulbronn is considered the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastic complex north of the Alps. Surrounded by fortified walls, the main buildings were constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries. The monastery's abbey, mainly in Transitional Gothic style, had a major influence in the spread of Gothic architecture over much of northern and central Europe. In the outer ring are the European stars as well as the year of issue. In the lower half of the outer ring is the country of issue, “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” or Federal Republic of Germany.
