The 2017 anniversary proof edition is a particular favourite and perhaps the most creative depiction of Britannia yet. The work of British-born artist, Louis Tamlyn, the design switches our Britannia’s flowing robes for a map of Great Britain, blurring the line between the warrior goddess and her homeland. She wears her corinthian helmet pushed back on her head and clutches trident and shield, standing ready to defend our shores against a backdrop that displays a stylised Union Jack. A tiny trident mint appears to the right. It’s a fresh take on the spirit of our nation and a fitting celebration of the 20th anniversary of this coin series. Tamlyn’s Britannia is paired with Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse, introduced in 2015. Like all 1oz Britannias, this one has a face value of £2s. It’s true value, however is tied both to it’s silver content (31.21 grams of .999 fine silver) and its limited edition status. Just 7,500 of these proof Britannias were issued in 2017, boasting a fine finish, achieved with multiple strikes of hand prepared dies.
