Description: 20th and 39th Virginia Infantry By G. L. Sherwood & Jeffery C. Weaver; 1994, 1st signed limited edition(#66 of 1,000); published by H. E. Howard, Lynchburg, VA.; 143pp. in very good condition. Part of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series. The 20th Virginia Infantry was organized in Southside Virginia in the days immediately following secession. After a brief period of training in Richmond, the 20th was ordered into northwest Virginia in late June 1861. Under its controversial colonel, John Pegram, the regiment fought hard against Federal forces at Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861, but Union numbers were overwhelming, and the 20th sustained staggering losses for that period of the war. The refugees from the fight found their way back to Monterey, Virginia, and soon asked permission to return home to recruit replacements for the recent casualties. This was granted, but by some mistake the regiment was disbanded in September of 1861. Many of those left in the ranks of the 20th Infantry were consolidated into the 2nd Regiment of the Wise Legion, that later became the 59th Virginia Infantry. Other members joined the 57th Infantry, Allen’s Lunenburg Artillery, and other units from Southside Virginia. The 39th Virginia was an unusual organization from its conception. The normal rules on minimum strengths were waived due to the isolated location of the regiment on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The 39th was formed from the citizenry of Accomak and Northampton counties in the early days of the war for the defense of the Eastern Shore. Confederate and Virginia authorities were unable to reinforce the regiment and when the Federal push down the Delmarva peninsula came in mid-November 1861, the regiment was scattered. About 110 members of the regiment managed to escape to Norfolk or Glouscester counties, but this number was far below what was required of a regiment. So, the 39th Virginia was disbanded, and the refugees were placed in the 16th and 46th Virginia Infantry regiments and the 19th Battalion Heavy Artillery. This volume contains full annotated rosters of both units!
