Florida ti plant shows off dark purple-red foliage variegated with reddish-pink. Ti plant is a bold houseplant with flamboyantly colored foliage. Also called cordyline, cabbage palm, or good luck plant, it's a perfect choice for adding a dash of style and drama to any well-lit room in your home. Most ti plant varieties have purple foliage variegated with streaks of hot pink, cream, white, or other shades of purple. The leaves add more color than many flowering houseplants -- and they're attractive all year long Ti plant is often being associated with good luck. In some areas of the tropics (it's a landscape shrub in frost-free areas) the plant is grown outside of outside of houses to bring good fortune and ward off ghosts or evil spirits. Grow ti plant in a high-light situation. In most areas, this colorful houseplant can take direct sun on the leaves when grown indoors. It doesn't like low-light spots, unfortunately. When this colorful plant doesn't get enough light, you'll see the leaves show less variegation and more green. Water ti plant when the soil surface starts to dry --- around the time the top inch or two of the potting mix dries to the touch is best. The plant is fairly drought tolerant, but the leaf tips may develop some browning if the plant stays too dry for too long. Like many tropical houseplants, ti plant appreciates the high relative humidity of its native range. It tolerates the humidity levels in the typical home pretty well, but if your home's air is on the dry side, it's helpful to boost humidity around your ti plant. Indoors, ti plant is slow growing, so the only pruning that should be necessary is to remove old leaves as age and turn yellow. Ti plant is more sensitive to excess fluoride than most houseplants; if your water supply has too much of this mineral for the plant, you may notice the edges of the leaves go brown and crispy prematurely. In severe cases, or after long periods of exposure, the entire leaf will go brown early. If your water has high fluoride levels, dilute it with rainwater, distilled water, or filtered water. Tropical ti plant is not intended for human or animal consumption. Growing Instructions 1. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. You can also use a premade sterile and well draining potting mix. 2. Press seeds down lightly about ¼ inch into the soil. 3. If you do not live in an area with high humidity like Florida, you can cover the pot or tray with a piece of plastic to help retain moisture. 4. Put the pots in a warm area in the shade and not exposed to direct sunlight. Try to keep the temperature at least 85 degrees F, use a heated mat if needed. The seeds need moist soil and heat to germinate. 5. Every few days, remove the plastic and mist with a spray bottle if the soil starts to dry. Seeds have to stay moist, not wet. 6. Periodically check the seeds when misting to see if there is any mold of fungus. If you observe this on the seeds, simply clean seeds with a copper based fungicide, and replace on top of a new sterile and moist mix again. 7. After the plant has germinated and has a few leaves, it’s time to transplant it into a larger pot or directly into the ground. 8. As with any other tropical plant, germination can be erratic, so patience is needed. If you are fortunate, you may have some seeds germinate in 2-6 weeks, but some can take longer so do not throw them out!
