Description: This listing is for a group of (3) original WW2 photographs depicting German soldiers in their leisure time. Two of the photos appear to have been taken in sequence. In the first, three men pose arm-in-arm for a group photo. In the next, these same soldiers can be seen running and leaping into handstands, and a fourth man rushes toward them. All around, a dozen other soldiers can be seen chatting, sunbathing, and changing. Two of these figures are wrestling on a blanket. The third photo in the group shows four soldiers preparing to dive from a rocky outcrop with a small waterfall, where they are joined by a black dog. All of the photos have faux deckled edges and are printed on glossy paper stock. The photo with a dog has an "Agfa-Lupex" watermark on the back and all three have brief pencil notations. A catalog note that accompanied these photos—"Wehrmacht Griechenland grenze soldat"— indicates they were taken during the German occupation of Greece, and that these soldiers were tasked with guarding the border. The German occupation of Greece began in April 1941, after a swift campaign alongside Italian and Bulgarian forces that resulted in the defeat of Greek and British Commonwealth forces. The occupation lasted until October 1944, when German forces withdrew from the mainland. The occupation was part of the wider Balkans Campaign, and Greece was strategically important for the Axis powers. The presence of German troops in Greece was marked by several phases of occupation, with the country being divided into zones controlled by Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria. The German occupation was particularly harsh, with significant resistance from Greek partisans leading to brutal reprisals from the German military. Within this tense historical backdrop, these photographs offer a rare look into the lives of soldiers away from the battlefield and capture a fleeting sense of normalcy and youth amongst a group of men who were barely more than boys. The two landscape photos are approximately 4"w x 2 7/8"h, and the photo in portrait orientation is approximately 2 1/2"w x 3 1/2"h. These are in overall good condition with minor to moderate surface imperfections, scratches, and handling wear. There are flecks in the prints from processing, and the photo with a dog has three slightly bumped corners. Because the photos are small, most of the imperfections don't stand out when viewed at actual size. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions.
