The leaves are produced in whorls of six to twelve, each leaf 8–40 mm long, simple, or forked into two to eight thread-like segments edged with spiny teeth; they are stiff and brittle. It is monoecious, with separate male and female flowers produced on the same plant. The flowers are small, 2 mm long, with eight or more greenish-brown petals; they are produced in the leaf axils. The fruit is a small nut 4–5 mm long, usually with three spines, two basal and one apical, 1–12 mm long. It can form turions: buds that sink to the bottom of the water that stay there during the winter and form new plants in spring. Most aquarist just let it float at the top of the aquarium but you can plant one end but it will not form roots. It only needs a small amount of light. Raising it with snails will keep algae from growing on the hornwort and glass surfaces. Info on snails Planorbella duryi, common name the Seminole rams-horn, is a species of air-breathing freshwater snail, a pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Planorbidae, the ram's horn snails. The species is endemic to Florida and is found frequently in home aquariums. They are considered as bladder type snails and can float on the surface -- they do not have a trap door. Description In the wild they are brown -- In captivity they have been bred to come in many colors.
