Save driving awards have always been around, just about as long as there have been motorized vehicles. The National Safety Council is the only safety organization to be chartered by the US Congress and recognized for its leadership in safety programs and advocacy. In 1964, the Council pioneered the country’s first Defensive Driving Course. Markel Insurance is a large multi-national insurer who at one time also offered achievement pins for graduates of their safe driving courses. The Markel award here is for a 1year safe driver. Here also are 7 separate awards for 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12 years of safe driving. These pins are gold plated, 20mm tall and in excellent condition. The striking and enamel work of some of these pins is extremely fine. Years 6, 11 and 12 here have screw post fasteners on the back, the others have clutch pins. The Markel pin has a screw pin.
