All are monoclinic, with a tendency towards pseudohexagonal crystals, and are similar in chemical composition. The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms. The word mica is derived from the Latin word mica, meaning a crumb, and probably influenced by micare, to glitter. Biotite is a name used for a large group of black mica minerals that are commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Metaphysical Properties: Mica is an excellent protection mineral, as it is not only insulating, but its reflective surface also deflects negative energy and psychic attack. Because of its non-conductivity, it is also very helpful in creating a shield from electromagnetic radiation, and can be placed on a desk between the user and a computer.
