About the book >.>.> It has been said of George Brannon that few other people have done so much to publicise the Isle of Wight. Many antique shops on the Island sell his engravings and recently, reproductions of them have arrived on the market. In spite of this interest in his work, little is recorded of the man or his family, and many references to him merely serve to confuse the issue. Not only was he responsible for eight major publications about the Isle of Wight but his work laid the founda- tions for his grandson George to become co-proprietor of the Isle of Wight County Press in 1884. In more ways than one then, George Brannon has played an important role in the history of the Island and this work not only records as much of his life as might be gleaned from official sources but has, as a major part, a catalogue of the prints to be found in his publication known as Vectis Scenery. His other seven works will be touched on only lightly (see Appendix D). None of them contain the charming and elegant engravings to be found in Vectis Scenery and only rarely do they appear at auctions or in antiquarian bookshops. (LL)
