"A California Pilgrimage" by Truesdell 1884 2nd Edition Poetry Guide to Missions

Description: A California Pilgrimage by Amelia Woodward Truesdell, Copyright 1884, 2nd Edition, Hardback, Poetic Guide to the California Spanish Missions Very scarce, small (12 mo.) hardbound book, 1884 copyright, Second Edition, by Amelia Woodward Truesdell (1839 – 1912) that uses poetry verse for descriptions as a virtual visitor guide for the California Missions. Dark green cloth cover decorated with embossed gilt title and mission bell tower image. Per the introduction (paraphrased), “this is not a history of the missions”. It is more of a poetic visitor guide to “the old shrines”. The book covers 19 of the 21 original California Missions and three “chapels” (also known as Estancias and Asistencias). 125 numbered pages plus one black and white illustration of the Mission San Carlos Del Carmelo (located in present day Carmel, California). Dimensions (approximate): 6-1/4” wide by 7-1/2” tall by ½” thick Weight: 13.4 oz. (not packaged for shipping) Condition: Excellent condition for 140 years old. There is some wear to the extremities (see photos) but no significant damage or repairs, a small amount of foxing on the first pages, no inscriptions, a few small pencil check marks on some of the Mission title ages, a small crease on the upper right corner of page 109, a “flea bite” on the long edge of page76, several smudges on the upper part of pages 1-3. It appears something was once taped to the blank first page which left two witness marks. There also appears to have been some erasures of pencil marks on two pages. The binding is solid; no separation, very slight looseness consistent with having been read at some point. Overall an excellent example for fans of California poetry and/or California Missions and collectors. Refer also to the information above and the photos for details.
